What Leaders in the Eating Disorder Field are saying about Recover Your Perspective –Editorial Reviews:

Recover Your Perspective is written by someone who has done just that—and then some. Janean is able to present the essentials of recovery with the heartfelt compassion of someone who has traveled into the depths of an eating disorder and found her way out, and also with the comprehensive understanding of a highly skilled psychologist and certified eating disorder specialist. While it is chock full of the necessary steps and practical skills essential for recovery, it is also infused with hope, humor, a little bit of sass, and a profound understanding of the recovery journey—from the inside out. This book is truly a gift to anyone seeking recovery and freedom.”

Anita Johnston, Ph.D.

Author of Eating in the Light of the Moon

Dr. Anderson is “real”-authentic and uncensored- which I think readers will appreciate.

Recover Your Perspective is written for clients who struggle with eating disorders and are trying to find a therapy style that fits their needs. It is also helpful for anyone who wants to learn more about different counseling theories and styles, including eating disorder nutrition therapist who can apply some of the principles in our work.

Author Janean Anderson is a Certified Eating Disorders Specialist who starts the book describing her own journey battling an eating disorder to becoming a recovered professional. The foundation of her philosophy is that when battling an eating disorder an individual is unable to be their authentic self. The eating disorder causes distorted perceptions of the world, falling into categories such as “Lies about Food,” “Lies about Self,” “Lies about Others,” and “Lies about Food.”

Each chapter explains in detail one main aspect of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) or Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and then explains how it provides tools to address each of the Lies. What was very helpful in reading this book is Dr. Anderson’s clear explanation of terms, translating “psychobabble” into understandable concepts that anyone can understand and then her wrap up of each chapter’s conclusions in “The Takeaway.”

This book is certainly valuable in our field as there are limited resources like this written for eating disorder clinicians especially dietitians.
